Just attended the first meeting of the newly inaugurated Tokyo Hackerspace tonight. I've been looking for a group of people that are interested in electronics design for awhile, especially those that like offbeat designs.There's a good mix of people with some artists, physicists, a bunch of IT people, singers, and caterers. It seems like it's going to be really fun, and I think a lot of good things can happen when you have open source collaborations with a bunch of people from different disciplines. The funny thing is that closed source doesn't lend itself well to collaboration, since each side is always worried about disclosing their IP. 

The group is pretty heavily skewed towards people in the IT industry which should turn out pretty interesting. If things work out, you might be seeing Zigbee wireless sensor networks getting integrated into internet technologies. Plus, it might give me a chance of actually having a social life...
